The Institute for Politics and Society is organizing another series of debates on gun laws entitled “Do we need new gun control at the EU level?”.

European Union institutions have discussed directives relating to the strengthening of gun control. The aim is to strengthen cooperation among states to exchange information on gun owners. The original proposal provoked strong criticism against the restriction of legally-held weapons. The Czech government rejected the proposal, but was outvoted in the EU.  There are, in the Czech Republic, 290,000 holders of firearms licenses and about 736,000 legally held handguns.

What will the new gun control measures be? What impact will this have on the manufacturers of weapons? Will new restrictions help control the black market in weapons? Does regulating arms necessarily involve the EU or other national states?

To answer these questions in debate will be:

Dita Charanzová, Member of the European Parliament, ALDE

Jiří Hynek, President and CEO, Association of Defense and Security Industry Association

Bohuslav Chalupa, Member of Parliament, hnutí ANO

The debate will be held on Monday, February 27, 2017 from 16:00 at the Law Faculty of Charles University (Nam. Curieových 901/7, Prague 1). The debate will be moderated by Milan Hamerský, a lawyer and a representative of the Institute for Politics and Society.
