The Presidency of the Council of the European Union switched from Romania to Finland on July 1st, 2019. As part of the presidency they have created besides their own goals a joint programme along with Romania and Croatia. This cooperation is focused on issues such as shared values, sustainable growth, security, and becoming a stronger global actor. The Finnish presidency expands this programme including on having the EU becoming a leader in fighting climate change. They also seek to improve the social inclusivity of the EU that will help better the wellbeing of its citizens. Finland will also incorporate Strategic Agenda 2019–2024 into the council. All of these goals are to create a stronger more united Europe that can face the challenges current in today’s world.
Does the changing of the presidency of the EU have benefits? How has Brexit effected the unity of the EU? How can the EU strengthen the international rule of law? What new challenges will the EU face in the coming year?
H.E. Jukka Pesola, Ambassador of Finland
