The Institute for Politics and Society is organizing an online debate "Do we invest or just save? What do Czechs really do with their money?", which will take place on Thursday, October 29, 2026, from 4:00 PM.

Czechs increasingly call themselves investors, but some of them mainly use savings accounts or products whose returns may not exceed inflation in the long term. The difference between a safe reserve, investment, and speculation is not just a matter of name, but primarily of risk and time horizon.

Practical decisions start with fees, diversification, expected returns and ability to bear losses. In addition to banks and investment platforms, influencers, financial advisors and the level of financial education also play a role. It is important to separate useful tools from promises that make investing an easy way to get rich quickly.

When is a savings account the right tool and when is it no longer enough in the long term? Do new investors understand risk, diversification, and fees? What role do banks, investment platforms, influencers, and financial advisors play? And what should the state and schools change in financial education?
